Phylum Arthropoda
Representative Animals: Spiders and Scorpions
Habitat: Phylum arthropoda is the biggest and most diverse phylum in the animal kingdom. Being the most diverse phylum means it also has very diverse habitats including land and water.
Reproductive System: Sexual reproduction. Male sex organs are found in pairs and reproduction uses egg (oviparous).
Often they can reproduce by means of metamorphosis, though metamorphous is more comparable to growth rather than reproduction.
Respiratory System: Hexopoda- air into lateral spiracles, then trachea to tracheoles through body. Crustacea - Gills. Blood transports gases throughout body.
Digestive System: Hexopoda has a complete digestive system similar to annelida because it has both a crop and gizzard. It also has a foregut, midgut and hindgut. The rectum is in the hindgut.
Crustacea has an esophagus and stomach with two chambers. Also has large digestive glands that release enzymes.
The hexopoda digestive system much closer resembles previous phylums where as the crustacea’s digestive system much closer resembles that of future phylums.
Circulatory System: Open circulatory system. Hexopoda uses a dorsal blood vessel. Crustacea has a heart, arteries, tissues, sinuses, gills, sinuses, and repeat. Both the crustacea and hexopoda have open circulatory systems yet he blood still follows a path.
Type of Symmetry: Bilaterally symmetrical
Type of Coelom: Coelom is present but a reduced amount compared to phylum Annelida
Type of Body Plan: Segmented. Exoskeleton. Protostome.
Number of body layers: three layers (ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm)
